James Barker

Technical Director

James has been working in online industries since 2000. He developed the first intranet for AXA Health before moving to become Technical Director of a local design agency and lecturing in web content management at the University of Greenwich. In 2017 he and Sam formed Open Door Digital.

As well as a wealth of practical experience, James also holds accreditations including an MA in Web Design and Content Planning, Google Ads certification and is a Google Product Expert.

James oversees all the technical aspects of our work, including web design, SEO and online advertising.

When not sitting behind a screen he enjoys curating his vinyl collection, running and holidaying in Cornwall.

Sam Barker

Managing Director

Sam has been a marketer since graduating in modern languages and marketing back in the 90s. She started her career working for an industrial rubber manufacturer, before moving to AXA Health where she worked in a variety of roles including marketing, sales and project management. This is also where she met James.

A spreadsheet-loving-super-organiser, Sam manages the day to day activity of the business and our client projects. Sam also oversees our content development activities.

Outside of work Sam is an enthusiastic gardener, a slightly less enthusiastic runner, and an over-enthusiastic James Bond fan.

Jo McCarthy

Lifestyle content specialist

After graduating in English and Art, Jo’s working life has continued to focus on communication and creativity. Working at AXA Health, she became an expert in marketing and customer communications, skills she used to great effect when she moved to become Client Services Director at a local design agency.

Since 2010 Jo has focused on copywriting, developing a particular talent for consumer-focused and lifestyle content.

Jo’s love of creativity and art continues beyond her copywriting work. She’s a keen artist, specialising in oils, and in recent years has developed a side line in ceramic art. Jo also enjoys holidaying in France, though hasn’t yet undertaken the challenge of copywriting in French!

Louise Winters

STEM content specialist

Louise has worked in marketing since 2010, both agency-side and freelance, and is always happiest in her home ground of copywriting. She’s also worked as a project manager for scientific research projects, giving her a strong analytical approach that’s well suited to writing about technical subjects. She is adept at relating complex ideas to familiar experiences and weaving a narrative that’s accurate and engaging.

She’s been fascinated by the process of writing since her teens and is still amazed that well crafted writing by one person can shift understanding, beliefs and behaviour when read by another.

When not working she loves long walks, listening to the birds and baking her locally renowned rhubarb upside-down cake.
